What is the Network Science Initiative?
The Network Science Initiative (NSI) is a custom research division within National Journal specializing in stakeholder mapping for corporate clients. NSI identifies the people and organizations – from government, industry, think tanks, advocates, and media – with the most influence on key policy topics, maps their connections within and across their respective communities, and develops tailored messaging and engagement strategies.
We are looking for curious and innovative researchers and consultants interested in learning about the most important policy and regulatory issues and the stakeholders driving them and then teaching our insights to clients.
Position in Brief:
The Senior Consultant is responsible for delivering NSI’s insightful analytic content to Fortune 500 and Association clients and managing a team of innovative researchers and consultants. They will serve as one of the primary faces of the business and as an advisor to our clients on our work. They also work with our analytic teams to scope projects to clients’ needs, develop effective research strategies, refine analytic insights and deliver content to clients. They are responsible for coaching and mentoring our analysts through the research and presentation processes.
The Senior Consultant presents work to clients, leads client conversations and feedback sessions, and provides critical product support to sales and renewals. They will be responsible for developing close relationships with clients and delivering content in a way that teaches the client core insights and burnishes the quality of the work. They work closely with other members of the NSI leadership team to manage the research and drive the strategy of the research practice. The Senior Consultant will work closely with company sales executives to provide research and analytic expertise in support of the sales process.
The ideal candidate will have exquisite communications skills, demonstrated consulting, research, or government affairs expertise and a record of success in serving clients or similar work. They will have promising early leadership experience and a strong desire to develop into a competent manager and inspired leader.
Core day-to-day responsibilities include:
Serving as one of the primary NSI leaders responsible for delivering content to clients and managing the NSI team.
Developing and executing on smart plans for client meetings – including delivering content, soliciting client feedback, developing clear government affairs strategies, and driving ideas for future work.
Managing a team of 4-6 research analysts, overseeing their work, and coaching them on their performance and growth.
Coaching analysts on effective briefing and content delivery strategies and helping them develop briefing plans in advance of client meetings.
Researching a wide range of government affairs issues and evaluating how we can support clients in navigating them.
Providing product support to the revenue team in pursuing new sales and renewals.
Thinking creatively about how to evolve the current product offering, improving our ability to deliver tight consulting products as well as suggesting new products and methodologies to pursue.
Working with other members of the NSI leadership team to sustain a culture that values pursuit of excellence, radical responsibility, curiosity, and mutual respect and inclusivity.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:
4-7 years of experience in consulting, government or public affairs, policy analysis, government, and/or other client services. Experience at a consulting or communications firm (communications, government affairs, or management consulting) is a plus, but a range of backgrounds will be considered.
Demonstrated communications and client-facing skills. Cogent, charismatic oral communications skills, ability to lead effective meetings, and strong interpersonal abilities.
The ability to highlight key insights within a complex set of qualitative data, synthesize large amounts of information, and then clearly explain these insights to clients.
A deep curiosity and demonstrated ability to quickly get up to speed and extract insights on new topics.
A strong writer able to clearly frame issues for a variety of audiences; some experience with PowerPoint or other visual presentation formats highly preferred.
Experience supporting sales and revenue processes is a plus.
A promising people leader with an early track record of success and a desire to develop strong management and leadership skills.
A full course of the COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment at National Journal
Earned Bachelor's degree required.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $85,000-$110,000
Remote Status: Hybrid work environment, based in Washington DC on Tuesdays and Thursdays
