National Journal is hiring a Managing Editor for National Journal Daily, our flagship daily publication on Congress, the White House and policy.

The Role/Duties:

National Journal has an immediate opening for a seasoned journalist/editor to oversee our congressional, White House, and policy coverage. The successful candidate will report to and work with the editor in chief to oversee operations and direct the editorial content of National Journal Daily’s online and print editions, as well as related newsletters. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the editor in chief to set overall editorial direction of National Journal Daily, and our congressional, executive, and policy coverage more generally

  • Supervising and editing a staff of 6-8 reporters as they develop, report, and write our signature smart analytical coverage, while serving as a leader and mentor.

  • Overseeing story budget for National Journal Daily’s five web issues per week, plus three print issues per week when both chambers of Congress are in session

  • Help conceive and launch new newsletter products in the coming year

  • Occasional writing and reporting as needed.

  • Contributing to podcasts, webinars, and other audience engagement efforts for NJ subscribers

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Expertise on policy and Congress, with strong sources

  • Strong news judgment and ability to tease out fresh angles and analysis

  • Creative problem solving and aggressive idea generation

  • Line editing for style, readability, and flow

  • Headline writing and photo/graphic selection

  • A commitment to nonpartisan, non-ideological reporting and writing

  • A collaborative, team-focused outlook

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years (post-undergraduate) experience in journalism 

  • A full course of the COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment at National Journal

  • Active contributor to a diverse and inclusive workplace

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $110,000-$120,000 (commensurate with experience), plus generous benefits.

Location: This job is based in Washington, DC. National Journal is currently operating on a hybrid basis, with employees required to be in the office every Tuesday and Thursday.
