Hotline Senate Campaign Correspondent

National Journal is hiring a Senate campaign correspondent for the Hotline, the political world’s oldest and most respected campaigns and elections newsletter.

The Role:

National Journal has an immediate opening for a journalist to cover Senate campaigns and the power players behind the battle for the upper chamber for Hotline Wake-Up Call and Hotline Latest Edition

The successful candidate will report to Hotline’s editor.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Aggregating and analyzing campaign and elections news for the two morning Hotline newsletters, with a special focus on the political parties, the national political landscape, and individual Senate races

  • Breaking news on the campaign trail

  • Developing and reporting longer feature stories on campaigns and elections for National Journal Daily

  • Contributing to podcasts, webinars, and other audience engagement efforts for NJ subscribers

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Strong knowledge of national politics and a voracious appetite for political news

  • Unrivaled news judgment, including the ability to select the best source on a given story, and to spot broader trends across stories

  • Deft, clear, and clean writing

  • Early riser who is adaptable to irregular hours

  • Flexible schedule 

  • Developing and maintaining key sources in Congress, campaigns, consultants, and academia

  • Developing original story ideas

  • Ability to meet daily and weekly deadlines

  • A demonstrated ability and willingness to learn from and contribute to a team

  • A commitment to nonpartisan, non-ideological reporting and writing

  • A demonstrated desire to excel and overcome challenges

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university

  • Active contributor to a diverse and inclusive workplace

Employment Type: Full-time

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $53,000-$58,000.

Remote Status: This job is based in Washington, DC. National Journal is operating on a hybrid basis, with employees required to be in the office every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. During the month of August 2024, National Journal teams will be fully remote.
