National Journal is hiring a congressional correspondent for NJ Daily, one of Washington’s most influential politics and policy publications covering Capitol Hill and the White House.

The Role:

National Journal has an immediate opening for a journalist to cover Capitol Hill in a largely general assignment capacity but with the opportunity to delve into specific policy areas.  

The successful candidate will report to NJ Daily’s editor.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Covering Congress both on news of the day and on deeper analyses of key issues affecting Capitol Hill.

  • Identifying issues of key value to our readers and being able to explain them in relevant terms.

  • Writing a combination of short quick takes (300-400 words) and longer deep dives (800-1,500 words) each week. 

  • Working with reporters from our sister publication, Hotline, on campaign-related congressional stories. 

  • Collaborating with other correspondents and editors on larger editorial projects

  • Contributing to podcasts, webinars, and other audience engagement efforts for NJ subscribers

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Strong knowledge of Capitol Hill and a voracious appetite for both policy and political news

  • Ability to develop sources quickly on Capitol Hill, including comfort with asking lawmakers tough questions

  • Deft, clear, and clean writing

  • Ability to understand and write about complex subjects

  • Flexible schedule that includes working evenings and the occasional weekend

  • Developing original story ideas

  • Ability to meet daily and weekly deadlines

  • Facility for AI usage and light Python coding is considered a plus

  • A demonstrated ability and willingness to learn from and contribute to a team

  • A commitment to nonpartisan, non-ideological reporting and writing

  • A demonstrated desire to excel and overcome challenges

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $60,000-$70,000 

Location: This job is based in Washington, DC. National Journal operates on a hybrid schedule, with employees required to be in the office or on Capitol Hill every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
